Schrodt Maclean and the Mechanics of Flying

Schrodt Maclean and the Mechanics of Flying
German Air Race pilot Klaus Schrodt is finding it hard to relax on the day before qualifications for the second leg of the Red Bull Air Race World Series and is facing a long night ahead.
The cooling system on his Extra 300S is causing problems: “The (air baffles/deflectors??) are not correctly attached and as a result the cooling system is not functioning one hundred percent, which, under these high temperatures, naturally lessens the performance enormously,” explains Schrodt. “After training my mechanic and I will have to spend at least four hours working on it and changing parts.” In addition, the exhaust temperature gauge and oil thermostat were malfunctioning. “We were able to find the problem and quickly fix it. I’m more worried about the weight of the plane. My aircraft weighs around 150 kilos more than the others. It’s a 1993 model, not exactly new. As a result, I’m at a severe disadvantage.”

Spanish Air Race Pilot Alex Maclean was unable to take part in Thursday’s training as scheduled. During his approach to the course, Maclean detected a knocking in the engine and turned back. “It’s nothing dangerous, but the knocking affects your concentration,“ Mclean jokes. “Due to the vibration the engine is under constant strain and as a result certain parts can cause further rattling. My mechanic fixed the problem in a minute and a half and I was able to restart after a short delay.”
