He survived the elimination round at the season opener in Abu Dhabi and ended up 12th before rising to ninth in his second Red Bull Air Race in Rio de Janeiro -- in front of a million spectators. Sergey Rakhmanin of Russia is now looking to climb further to new heights in the desert of Monument Valley, Utah.
The two first circuits in Abu Dhabi and Rio were so remarkably different from each other. How were you able to adapt to the change in conditions?
Rakhmanin: “Actually it wasn’t too bad. I was able to adjust well to both circuits. Abu Dhabi was difficult to fly. On top of that, it was the first race in my Air Race career so I was obviously a little bit nervous. Rio was something special. I’ll never forget the view out of the cockpit. It left a lasting impression on me.“
There are three U.S. pilots – Chambliss, Mangold, Goulian – who will have a home court advantage in Monument Valley. How do you rate the U.S. pilots?
“They certainly have strong personalities, but they are all totally different from each other. That makes them interesting. But I am just concentrating on myself.“
How do you see your future? Do you think you can win a race?
Rakhmanin: “I’ve got a lot of flying experience and don’t think I’m a beginner by any stretch of the imagination, but rather I see myself as a realist and so I think I’m capable of winning. I’ve reached a comfortable level. I’d say if body, spirit and strategy can all fit together for me in a race, there’s a chance to win. I’m going forward one step at a time. I’m studying the mistakes I make and trying to learn from them. That’s the most important thing at the moment.“
How do you see your chances in Monument Valley?
Rakhmanin: “It’s difficult to say. For the first time this season we’re not flying over water. The thin air conditions are making my aircraft feel a bit strange. The big question is who will be able to adapt best to that.“
